We Are Catholic.

I put together the following little video as a 'promo' for a young Catholic group I am helping out with. Some folks thought I should post it, so here it is.
Hope it speaks to you.

Please feel free to share it and link it on your blog.
I didn't advertise my blog address on the actual video because I wanted it to be used as something stand-alone.

This project has produced joy in my heart and hope in my soul.
Maybe it will do the same for some of you.

P.S.:
I am trying to figure out a way to make it availble, per some requests, for use at youth groups, catechism, and in other situations where the YouTube version might not work. I will keep you all updated. I can't sell it or "charge" for its production since I don't own the rights to the photos or music. So I am trying to figure out a legal "Fair Use" way to get it into the hands that want to use it for educational and evangelization purposes.

Special inspirational h/t to: Mindy, Marc, Rebecca, Terry, Dan, Larry, and Father Acervo.

Radio Appearance to talk about Providence Hospital Situation

Wanted to let my reading faithful know that I will be going onto Holy Family Radio, in Louisville, Kentucky tomorrow to discuss the Providence Catholic Hospital situation and how it relates to ERDs, 'Mediate Cooperation', and Catholic identity. I have been asked by the ever gracious Ms. Lisa Graas to come on with her, and discuss these topics because of a proposed merger between a Catholic Hospital and a secular one that is being debated there in Louisville. Since there is the opportunity to prevent another Catholic hospital from succumbing to the 'Culture of Death', as Pope John Paul II aptly named it, this seems like a good outlet to have such a discussion.

The Archbishop of Louisville is the Most Reverend Joseph Kurtz, and so the hope is to have a discussion that outlines the ideas behind ERDs and explains the scandal that occurs when those directives are not followed, and hopefully the good Archbishop will be able to listen to that discussion. On top of that, Archbishop Kurtz is the Vice President of the USCCB, so there is some hope that his decision and leadership on the issue will be a model and template for other Bishops to follow.

The nice part is that this radio station streams its broadcast live, so anyone can listen wherever the internet is found. So hopefully there will be some here in Alaska that can listen in.

The Details are as follows:
  • Who: Lisa Graas and Myself

  • What: Discussing Providence & Mercy hospitals, ERDs, 'Mediate Cooperation', and Catholic identity

  • Where: WLCR AM 1040 - Louisville, Kentucky & The Internet (Live Stream)

  • When: Tomorrow - Thursday, August 11 at approximately 5:30 - 6:00 pm ET (1:30 - 2:00pm Alaska Time)

  • Why: To explain the issues surrounding Providence and other Hospitals that ignore their ERDs

  • How: LISTEN ONLINE: Go to WLCR and click on the LISTEN LIVE Link

Try and listen in, as what we discuss will be pertinent not only to Louisville and Anchorage listeners, but to Catholics nationwide.

The Southeast Alaska Catholic Online - Diocese of Juneau, Alaska

The Southeast Alaska Catholic Online, or SeAC Online as they refer to themselves, is shaping up to be a find publication. It is refreshing to see some of the articles they are publishing. For example, two recent samplings are:

&

It is nice to see Catholic publications taking an interest in Liturgical and Canonical issues. Catholic diocesan publications need to realize, as do the SEAC Online and Catholic, that there is a great Catechetical opportunity with Catholic papers. The SEAC Online has upped the ante with their recent articles on Catholics and Divorce and Gregorian Chant. I would almost consider those topics taboo or third-rail when it comes to the Catholic world, so I am pleasantly surprised!

I look forward to more orthodox and enlightening articles to come! Congrats Bishop Burns!

Won't you take a minute and email the Bishop and thank him for his commitment to orthodox Catholic teachings?

The Most Reverend Bishop Edward Burns
(Click on link above for email)

Also, I notice that Bishop Burns started a blog but hasn't kept it up much. In your email you might include a nice little word or two of encouragement in updating it more often. We need to hear from our priests, especially the Bishops!

Pope Benedict & Archbishop Dolan on the Today Show

This Thursday the Pope and Archbishop Dolan will be featured on the Today show, with Matt Lauer reporting from the Vatican. Here is more from <blech> the HuffPost:
In its first visit to the papal state since the death of Pope John Paul II, NBC’s "Today" show will broadcast live from Vatican City on Thursday in an hour-long show that will include behind-the-scenes footage of Pope Benedict XVI and a wide-ranging interview with New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan.

The show, which is being taped Wednesday and Thursday at the Vatican, comes on the heels of the the first meeting of a new Vatican council to promote the church in the face of rising secularism in the West.

A "Today" show producer said the archbishop, who is also the president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, will discuss topics including the church’s sexual abuse scandals, the decline in church attendance in Europe, changes in church demographics in the United States, his journey to priesthood and his time as a Roman Catholic university professor in Rome in the 1990s.
How come I just found out that this was going to happen this week? Was it just announced? Not only that but I found out via the HuffPost.

Seriously... Catholic Blogosphere you dropped the ball on this one. Oh wait. Hehe, I guess that's me!

This is a cool thing. Say what you will about Lauer or the Today show, as long as it isn't a hit piece this helps Catholicism and the Holy Father. What is odd though is that it is this THURSDAY, Ascension Thursday, in Rome. I guess moving feast days around in the U.S. has some advantages, as the report says that they have been trying to do this for a while and this is the first opening in the Archbishops schedule. I can't find a whole lot of mention of this event except on Archbishop Dolan's blog.

I will update further once I can get some more time and information. Until then we will have to deal with the HuffPo article.

Hybrid Cloud Services for Industry-Specific Applications

More IT managers will turn to cloud services to accelerate their responsiveness to business needs. Quicker IT deployments, end-user self-service, and reduced start-up costs equate to faster time-to-market for many organizations. Others will want to take advantage of the ability to pivot more quickly and adapt to market changes.

Beyond the desire for better, faster and cheaper processes, cloud services will enable entirely new business models and associated revenue streams. Acceptance will advance as cloud architectures prove out the opportunities for real business innovation and new functionality.

There is no single journey to cloud adoption, but rather a wide variety of entrance ramps and paths. On the demand side, organizations have different starting points and different objectives. Fortunately, public cloud computing services can unleash an exciting mix of new technologies, architectures, and organizational approaches.

Let’s consider the needs of the evolving media sector. Innovation in business processes already struggle to keep pace with the rapid advancements in technology. While cloud computing promises to unlock new levels of automation, it could also create new opportunities for value-added systems integration and business process transformation.

Media Company Hybrid Cloud Use-Case Scenario
  • The media distribution landscape is rapidly changing from silos of video distribution (within pay-TV, broadcast, retail) to multi-channel or digital distribution.
  • Content creators perceive several dangers in digital media: piracy, loss of control or direct relationships, and disintermediation.
  • Content creators also see an opportunity in real-time media consumption data integrated across distribution channels and devices.

Role for Cloud Technologies
  • A cloud-based content registry that manages content access rights across users, content creators, distributors, and devices offers several benefits.
  • For end-consumers, the registry enables convenience, personalization, and community (with access to content on multiple devices, and new social experiences).
  • Content creators and other providers of the registry can take advantage of new business models based on real-time data, personalization, and user targeting.
  • The registry could drive incremental media purchases and greater consumption with protected content assets, enhanced discovery, and more powerful recommendation engines.

Application Considerations
  • A content registry requires significant coordination within the media industry (e.g., agreement on common methods for managing digital rights and common limits to each consumption model with rules for content use).
  • The rights of both the content creators and the end-consumers must be protected in terms of how their respective data is accessed, protected, and used.

For this scenario to succeed, a wide range of players must work in concert to deliver on the promise of hybrid cloud services. Substantial opportunities for innovation and value creation exist at all levels of the stack, from data center and virtualization design to foundational systems to end-user applications to business processes.

Catholic Media Promotions Day

Today is Catholic Media Promotions Day. What is that you ask?

  1. On March 15, everyone with a blog, podcast, or Facebook page should list their favorite 3 blogs, 3 podcasts, 3 other media, 3 random Catholic things online, and their own projects.
  2. Then post the link to the list here on March 15th. Additionally, to help get the word out, press are asked to write articles and press releases for this day.
  3. Lastly, on March 15th, go to iTunes and leave at least 3 positive written reviews for various Catholic podcasts and 3 positive written reviews for Catholic mobile applications.
So I decided I might as well join the crowd and do this. So here we go:

Favorite Blogs:
I am not going to post any of the "BIG" blogs because I am assuming you go there, so I am going to post my favorite "gems" that I can hopefully get some new readers to:

Other Catholic Media

There is a lot of other things I could have listed but I am not feeling very creative today. I think I need to eat.

Monday morning quarterbacking

Since it is hard for me to get long posts out I figured I would solicit comments from you all regarding any items of note from your experience watching the Super Bowl.

I personally want to discuss the Chrysler commercial (as a "Detroiter") and a few others, but will wait until I can post from my laptop (this post is coming from my phone).

Until then I have some questions to inspire comment discussion. Was the Super Bowl family friendly viewing? Does the event still have its appeal if you don't have a "dog in the fight"? Who saw Bill O'Reilly's interview with President Obama? How do you handle watching the game with kids considering the messages that are sent in some of the commercials and commentary?

Leave your comments below and hopefully I can get to a longer post about my thoughts soon.
