Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows (Sept. 15)

Altar of Our Lady of Sorrows in Santa Maria dei Servi, Siena, Italy
Today is the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows (Fr. A) in the Modern Roman Catholic Calendar. (More Info: A Catholic View). There is a Feast of the Seven Sorrows in the Traditional Catholic Calendar which occurs in April.

Our Lady of Sorrows is a devotion that I am particularly... devoted to, for lack of a better term. Someone at my parish gave me a "7 Sorrows Rosary/Chaplet" and after praying it the first time, I found myself drawn deeply into the mysteries of the Seven Sorrows, which are:
  1. The prophecy of Simeon (Luke 2:25-35)
  2. The flight into Egypt (Matthew 2:13-15)
  3. Loss of the Child Jesus for three days (Luke 2:41-50)
  4. Mary meets Jesus on his way to Calvary (Luke 23:27-31; John 19:17)
  5. Crucifixion and Death of Jesus (John 19:25-30)
  6. The body of Jesus being taken from the Cross (Psalm 130; Luke 23:50-54; John 19:31-37)
  7. The burial of Jesus (Isaiah 53:8; Luke 23:50-56; John 19:38-42; Mark 15:40-47)
The "Seven Sorrows Chaplet" is similar to Praying the Rosary, only the meditations are based on the Sorrows, or Dolors, of Mary. I wrote more about my thoughts on the Meditations here: "7 Sorrows

You can find more info on how to pray the Seven Sorrows Devotion at:
Here are some great thoughts on the Seven Sorrows by Taylor Marshall:
Also, on this Feast, please remember me in prayer. My family and I are trying to discern some pretty big life decisions, and the days have been a struggle for us recently. We appreciate any "extra" prayers you can offer for us.

Restoration of "Fish Eaters" w/ Marian Apparition?

Ok, so I wanted my first post in my blog frenzy to be light hearted, somewhat, while I contemplated how I am going to approach my take on Universae Ecclesiae.

So I noticed something in a recent post by Father John Boyle, one of my favorite "hidden gem" priest bloggers (along with Father Acervo). He posted about the English and Welsh Bishops deciding to reinstate the practice of "Meatless" Fridays as Friday penance for Catholics. You can read his post here.

This is an interesting post in an of itself, but you can find out the specifics at his blog. I am trying to transition from simply "reposting" things unless there is something I need to add or comment on... and boy is this the case in this instance.

So, Father Boyle posted a picture along with his post, I am sure just a picture he "Goggled" and decided to choose because it was - "interesting" or "silly" looking. Here is that pic:

Now do you notice anything strange or interesting about this fish? Do you think it supports the Bishops in any way? I do!

Now I have no idea what kind of fish that is, but the second I looked at it I notice something:

Do you see what I see? No?

What?! If people can see Mary on pieces of toast and water stains on overpasses, can't I see Her in the mouth of a fish on a priest's blog? I mean at least that has some Catholic symbolism!

Ok, Ok... I'll get on to my other posts! (I am sure Terry or Larry will appreciate this, or Dan)

Feast of the Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary

The Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Haven't been at my computer much the past two days, but I needed to get this info out there as The Seven Sorrows of Mary, especially the Chaplet/Rosary is very important to me. I found this at the St. Lawrence Press Blog:
Today, Friday in Passion week, is the feast of the Seven Sorrows of the BVM. It is of greater-double rite. In the Breviary and Missal the texts for the feast are found in the Sanctoral at the end of March. The liturgical colour of the feast is white.

At Vespers yesterday morning the antiphons, Vadam ad montem etc, were proper to the feast and sung with psalms 115, 119, 139, 140 & 141. The chapter from Isaiah was proper and the hymn was the moving Stabat Mater dolorosa. The antiphon on the Magnificat and collect are both proper to the feast. After the collect of the feast a commemoration was sung of the preceding feast of St. Justin and then of the Passiontide feria. At Compline Te lucis is sung with the Doxology Jesu, tibi sit gloria, Qui passus es pro servulis etc.

At Mattins thee invitatory is proper, Dolores gloriosae etc. The hymn is Sancta Mater, a continuation of Stabat Mater. The antiphons and psalms are proper (the first antiphon Astiterunt, of course is the same antiphon sung at Tenebrae of Good Friday. The lessons in the first nocturn are from Isaiah. In the second nocturn the lessons are from a sermon of St. Bernard. In the third nocturn the lessons are taken from a homily of St. Augustine on St. John's Gospel. The ninth lesson is the homily for Friday in Passion week. The Te Deum is sung. At Lauds the antiphons, Vadam ad montem etc, are proper and sung with the Dominical psalms. The Office hymn at Lauds is Virgo virginum. After the collect of the feast a commemoration is sung of the Passiontide feria.

At Prime and the other Hours the hymns are sung to the special tone of the Doxology: Jesu tibi sit gloria, Qui passus es pro servulis, Cum Patre et almo Spiritu, In sempiterna saecula. At Prime the festal psalms are sung (Pss. 53, 118i & 118ii). In the short responsory the verse Qui passus es propter nostram salutem is sung. The short lesson is proper to the feast Generationem ejus etc.

Mass is sung after Terce. The Gloria is sung, the second collect is of Friday in Passion week. After the Tract Stabat Mater is sung as a sequence. The Creed is sung, the preface is of the BVM with the clause Et te in Transfixione and the last Gospel is of Friday in Passion week.

Private Masses may be of the Friday in Passion week with a commemoration (and last Gospel)of the Seven Sorrows.

At Second Vespers the antiphons, psalms, chapter and hymn are the same as were sung yesterday but the antiphon on the Magnificat is proper. After the collect of the feast a commemoration is sung of the Passiontide feria. At Compline Te lucis is sung to with the tone of the proper Doxology.

In the 'liturgical books of 1962' the Office of the Seven Sorrows has been reduced to a mere commemoration in the Office of the Friday of the 'First Passion Week'. However a rubric in the 1962 Missal allows two Masses of the former feast to be celebrated for pastoral reasons where devotion to the feast exists.
Now in the current calendar we have the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows, which combines this feast and OLoS. Wiki has more info in succinct fashion: Feast of the Seven Sorrows and New Advent goes further in-depth: Feast of the Seven Sorrows.

I would still suggest praying the "Seven Sorrows Chaplet" today, what a perfect reason to do so, especially in Lent.

Solemnity of The Annunciation - March 25

O God, who didst will that Thy Word should take flesh, at the message of an Angel, in the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary, grant to Thy suppliant people, that we who believe her to be truly the Mother of God, may be helped by her intercession with Thee. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth . . .

Grant to us Thy servants, we beseech Thee, O Lord God, that we may enjoy perpetual health of mind and body: and through the intercession of the Blessed Mary ever Virgin may be delivered from present sorrow and enjoy everlasting gladness. Through our Lord Jesus Christ thy Son . .
By her yes, we not only received our Lord as a salvific King, but we too acquired Our Lady Queen of Heaven and the Angels as an intercessor for our needs and petitions with her same Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ.

It pains me to think that there are Christians so unwilling to accept the help of her that was entrusted to us. I ask for Our Lady's intercession for them, so they too can understand and love the fulness of all the Christ gave to us.

I also pray for young women to say yes to God in the area of religious vocation. The Church needs prayer and few prayer longer, harder, and more than the good women sisters and nuns dedicated to Christ.

The Lenten Journey with Mary & the 7 Sorrows

Our Lady of 7 Sorrows
As we begin Lent tomorrow, with Ash Wednesday, I can't help but think of Mary's journey through her life. I was recently given a "7 Sorrows Rosary (Chaplet)" and have prayed it once and found it very moving. I prayed it while at Adoration, and I know that had an affect on things, but to meditate upon all that Mary went through was moving.
···•°···
But Mary kept all these things, pondering them in her heart. [Luke 2:19]
The amazing part for me is that she took everything into her heart, because of her fiat, her "YES!" She could of at any time fought against these things, but she continued to say 'Yes' along the way. Her 'Yes' was in her mind, a 'once-for-all' choice and didn't represent little mini-choices along the way. I think she knew ahead of time, what her choice meant – not only pain and suffering for her Son, but also for herself.
···°•···
why doesn't we mirror our model?
Mary is referred to as the "Mirror of Justice" but why then do we not model that with ourselves? Why do we resemble a "Mirror of Ashes"? I want to work this Lent on wiping away my ashes [my sins, my penance, my shame] and create myself to be a Mirror of Justice for Our Lady. I want to reflect that which she reflects - Justice and Truth.
···•°···
that image is burned into my mind
You know the image I am talking about. The scene from "The Passion of Christ" where Mary, the Mother of God, and Mary Magdelene are wiping up Christ's Sacred and Holy Blood. I think of it every time I get ashes. I think about how it symbolizes so much of what Mary did, and so little of what we do. We are so "me" focused that we wouldn't dare think of doing something like that. Now that scene doesn't have a biblical or a traditional explanation but I always think of it as Mary's way of protecting the Precious Blood. It was her way of caring for her Son, in a way that none of us understood yet. It was almost as if that scene is saying: "Lest we never dishonor His Blood again, He shed it for us, so that we may be forgiven. Let us never spill another drop, but Honor and Adore it forevermore."

Let us pray that we have a Holy and Sorrowful Lent - Let us keep Mary in our hearts as we journey towards HIM.

Because it is TRUE

Mark Shea from Catholic and Enjoying it! is a great writer. I found this gem while reading a piece he wrote on the Perpetual Virginity of Mary. I had to pass it along as it is a good summary of exactly what the Catholic Faith IS. I think you will find it stands well enough on its own even though it is an answer to a specific question:
The answer is that the Catholic faith is not a product of consumer culture. It proposes certain truths to us not because they suit our lifestyle, but because they're true. Nobody prefers a universe in which it's necessary to "take up your cross" (versus, say, a universe in which you just have to take up your TV remote) in order to find life eternal. It's just that the universe Jesus describes happens to be the universe we live in, like it or not. In the same way, the Church tells us Mary is a perpetual virgin not because it suits somebody's lifestyle, but because she is a perpetual virgin, and that has real implications for us.
There are some things that just are... whether we like it or not. Embrace the reality and realize that God give's us everything we need... despite ourselves.

Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception - December 8th

Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy,
our Life, our Sweetness, and our Hope.
To Thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve.
To Thee do we send up our sighs mourning
and weeping in this valley of tears.
Turn then, most gracious Advocate,
Thine Eyes of Mercy toward us,
and after this our exile show us the
Blessed Fruit of thy Womb, Jesus.
O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.
Pray for us O Holy Mother of God
That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Feast of the Holy Family

Yesterday was the feast of the Holy Family. I know I am a day late on this, but I felt it was important to separate this from all the other Christmas posts that were being thrown up all around.

Smarter people than I have posted about this feast and the meaning behind the readings. But I want to give my own little take. Here is the Gospel Reading:

41 And hisparents went every year to Jerusalem, at the solemn day of the pasch. 42 And when he was twelve years old, they going up into Jerusalem, according to the custom of the feast, 43 and having fulfilled the days, when they returned, the child Jesus remained inJerusalem. And his parents knew it not. 44 And thinking that he was in the company, they came a day's journey and sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance. 45 And not finding him, they returned into Jerusalem, seeking him. 46 And it came to pass, that, after three days, they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of thedoctors, hearing them and asking them questions.47 And all that heard him were astonished at his wisdom and his answers. 48 And seeing him, they wondered. And his mother said to him: Son, why have you done so to us? Behold your father and I have sought you sorrowing. 49 And he said to them: How is it that you sought me? Did you not know that I must be about my father's business? 50 And they understood not the word that he spoke unto them. 51 And he went down with them and came to Nazarethand was subject to them. And his mother kept all these words in her heart. 52 And Jesus advanced in wisdom and age and grace with God and men.  --- Luke 2:41-52
The Catena Aurea has some interesting commentary. I will post some of the finer points below and then my commentary will be below that. [All Catena Aurea material is from Catechetics Online]
AMBROSE; Or the twelfth year was the commencement of our Lord's disputation with the doctors, for this was the number of the Evangelists necessary to preach the faith.
THEOPHYL; But some one will ask, how was it that the Son of God, brought up by His parents with such care, could be left behind from forgetfulness? To which it is answered, that the custom of the children of Israel while assembling at Jerusalem on the feast days, or returning to their homes, was for the women and men to go separately, and the infants or children to go with either parent indiscriminately. And so both Mary and Joseph each thought in turn that the Child Jesus, whom they saw not with them, was returning with the other parent. Hence it follows, But they, supposing him to have been in the company, &c
THEOPHYL; To show that He was a man, He humbly listened to the masters; but to prove that He was God, He divinely answered those who spoke.
CHRYS. The Lord truly did no miracle in His childhood, yet this one fact St. Luke mentions, which made men look with wonder upon Him.
ORIGEN; Let us then also ourselves be subject to our parents. But if our fathers are not let us be subject to those who are our fathers. Jesus the Son of God is subject to Joseph and Mary. But I must be subject to the Bishop who has been constituted my father. It seems that Joseph knew that Jesus was greater than he, and there fore in awe moderated his authority. But let every one see, that oftentimes he who is subject is the greater. Which if they who are higher in dignity understand they will not be elated with pride, knowing that their superior is subject to them.
I think this final commentary from Origen is the most striking. The concept of subjecting one's self to another, even when we are the 'greater' is one of humility. I wondered something while contemplating the idea of parenthood and the image of God:

If we are truly made in the image of God, then we too must go through a transformation and reformation in our souls throughout our life. When we are born, and a single person in our unity with God, we are like God the Father, sovereign over ourselves in unity with God. Sovereign in the sense that we submit ourselves to God singularly. We then get married, and subject ourselves to our spouse. We humble our soul to another in unity, or tri-unity, with God and our spouse. Much the way God sent Jesus, HIS Son in a Tri-Unity with humanity. Finally, the descending of the Holy Spirit is the creation of something separate but unified not in a neo-creative way, but instead in a pro-creative way. [Here, pro-creative not in a sexual sense, but instead a metaphysical or spiritual way.]
The Holy Spirit is the the ESSENCE of God the Father and Jesus [or of the same ESSENCE] - the third person of the Trinity both a totality of the other two and at the same time autonomous and unique. This is similar to how when a baby is born to the couple described above, that baby contains both the combined and SAME ESSENCE of the unified couple, but also its own. The man and woman in a marriage, completely submit themself to each other and their child, not in disgrace but instead in love and obedience. The man and  the woman each become the third in the tri-union within their family. Whether it be with their spouse and child or; with the tri-union with the Body of Christ [the Church] and God.

We have everything that we need in the bible and the teachings of the Catholic Church. We see the submission of both Joseph and Mary in their unique roles as individuals and as "players" in the greater cosmic and historical pageantry of the Mystery of God. We too must learn submission, not out of concession [loss] but instead out of obedience and love.

Immaculate Conception (Post from my old parish)

I miss my old parish sometimes... just because we had 3 AMAZING PRIESTS! One who came on just before we moved celebrated his first Mass in the Tridentine Rite!!

Here is the post from another priest from my old parish's blog:
See his whole blog here: Father Acervo's Blog

I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, and my soul shall be joyful in my God: for He hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, and with the robe of justice He hath covered me, as a bride adorned with her jewels. (Introit, Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Roman Missal)

“The most Blessed Virgin Mary was, from the first moment of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege of almighty God and by virtue of the merits of Jesus Christ, Savior of the human race, preserved immune from all stain of original sin.” (Pius IX, Ineffabilis Deus, 1854.)

Immaculate Conception Novena - Day 1 (From EWTN)

I am not going to lie... I am copy and pasting from EWTN.com ... but I am doing so in an attempt to get people to join in this Novena. If you forgot that today [yesterday for most of you reading this] is the first day of the Novena, don't fret, just do part in the morning and part at night.

For those that don't know... the Novena is a nine (9) day prayer. The last day is said on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. This is a GREAT ADVENT prayer to do with your family. It is short and meaningful! An easy way to add prayer to your family during the holiday and to remember the HOLYday.

PRAYER TO THE
IMMACULATE CONCEPTION

O God,  who by the Immaculate Conception
of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
did prepare a worthy dwelling place for Your Son,
we beseech You that, as by the foreseen death of this, Your Son, You did preserve Her from all stain,
so too You would permit us, purified through Her intercession,  to come unto You.
Through the same Lord Jesus Christ,  Your Son, who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, world without end.

Amen.

First, recite the Prayer to the Immaculate Conception.
Then, recite the appropriate prayer of each of the nine days.

Day One
O most Holy Virgin, who was pleasing to the Lord and became His mother, immaculate in body and spirit, in faith and in love, look kindly on me as I implore your powerful intercession. O most Holy Mother, who by your blessed Immaculate Conception, from the first moment of your conception did crush the head of the enemy, receive our prayers as we implore you to present at the throne of God the favor we now request...
(State your intention here...)
O Mary of the Immaculate Conception, Mother of Christ, you had influence with your Divine Son while upon this earth; you have the same influence now in heaven. Pray for us and obtain for us from him the granting of my petition if it be the Divine Will.

Love of Blessed Mary....

"Someone truly in love with Mary
finds time to turn to her as often as possible,
to stay as long as possible at her feet.
We would entrust our troubles and worries,
and our whole life to her."

St. Maximilian Kolbe
