Prayers for Cam and Baby

Prayer warriors, I want to let you know that Cam, over at "A Woman's Place is..." really needs some prayers right now. She is pregnant, 13 weeks, and has received some rather sad and difficult news:
Relief began to fade during the ultrasound. The ultrasound tech couldn't tell me anything, but the look on his face, and the look on the face of the nurse in the room, were both very grim. When the doctor came back into the room a while later he looked very sad.

He said that the baby is alive, but that it is measuring eight weeks (I'm 13 weeks along). More worrisome, he explained was the heart rate, which at 90 beats per minute, was much too low. He went on to say that, at this point there's not really anything anyone can do and that, unless a miracle occurs, I will likely miscarry very soon.

And so we wait. And cry. I've been praying every chaplet I can think of (Saint Gerard, Blessed Kateri, Saint Jude, Saint Anne, Saint Philomena and Saint Padre Pio were the saints whose intercession I prayed for before sleeping last night and the rosary) and am clinging to the tiny bit of hope that remains. And I do appreciate all your prayers. We're supposed to leave for Florida on Sunday. I have a feeling the weeks ahead are going to feel very long.
So please take a moment right now, ask those saints for intercessory help and favor and ask Jesus to cradle Cam, her husband, and their unborn baby in His hands. She is in the midst of a lot of life events and so this of course hits the way these things do: at the busiest of times.

On the Clock...

Just a quick update about BABY WATCH, which is what I am calling my family situation right now. My wife is now 37 weeks, which means she is full term. Most of our families have semi-earlier births, but we think God is pretty good at knowing the best time for the baby to come.

We have met with our Nurse-Midwife, our OB, and have been meeting with our Doulas. [Guess I won't be making jokes or sarcastic comments during the delivery with 4 birthing professionals - all female- in the room :( ] So now we are just "on the clock" - as they say in pro sports drafts. The due date is Jan. 16. Both of our sisters are flying in on the 14th and 17th... so I think the baby will either be early whereas they will both miss the birth - or it will be late causing a "panic" as to whether they will even BE HERE for the birth.

I am informing you this solely out of excitement... but also in case I "disappear" for a few days. The Christmas and New Year days always create sporadic blog situations for some people and then to add to it a birth... people might just stop reading all together if I don't post for a week straight... so please stick with me :)

Also... we finally received 3 things from our registry and feel confident having the child now. We have a bassinet/co-sleeper, a car seat, and some cloth diapers. We aren't slacking due to some lazy attitude, we just are without a baby store within 3-hours of us so it has made it difficult to STOCK UP. We really are blessed with some AMAZING new friends and 'family' [aka Church friends] so we have pretty much everything we need. We also know once the little mini-human leaves its round the clock jacuzzi we will have more than what we need.

I ask for nothing more than your prayers and a little patience when the time comes. [Also, if you are a fabulously rich person looking to spoil a strange child, you can always click on my Amazon wish list and get the child something from there. Even the books will help... trust me I will make sure I read them to the baby.] We really are excited... and I look forward to posting more posts relating to the Defense of Children and families on this blog. I know I have slipped a bit in my "focus" but I plan to get back to the theme of Battling Against the Wickedness and Snares of the Devil.... right after we bring a bundle of love into the world.

Now if we could only settle on a good strong Catholic name....

Baby Names...

So most parents I know have gone through the naming process. Some are really good at it and others struggle.

My wife and I are somewhat in the middle. Names are really important to us and we want to go with biblical or saint names. We also like the idea of "family" names but some family members have said that they want us to give the baby "its own name."

It isn't an easy task. Since we aren't finding out the sex of the baby it only doubles the "fun." I asked my mom for advice and she said, "When you look at the baby you will just know." I sure hope that is true...

I am not stressing about it... I just think that names are really important and want to make the right choice.

Baby Gear Suggestions

So I have a task for all the readers. My wife and I are 2 months away from baby #1. We are pretty familiar with infants and have a good idea what we need in terms of "baby gear." Yet, living up in Alaska we do have some odd obstacles to confront with attaining such items:

  1. We don't have a store, aside from Fred Meyer, that sells "new baby items." We do have a resale shop but it is limited.
  2. We aren't doing a "baby shower." We don't feel right doing so with the new people we know around here, and we also don't think it's appropriate considering the situation we are in.
  3. Add to #2, the fact that we also don't have the room/space/ability to receive & then bring back to Michigan a bunch of stuff we might receive.
  4. Shipping to AK is EXPENSIVE!

So we want to be really intentional about anything that we purchase or ask family members for. You add to the fact that my current position and the cost of living up here make things tight, we want to make sure we get only that which we need. [Need vs. Want is a big question for us]

So, my task for you all; let me know things that you absolutely LOVE! They don't have to be big things, or even for newborns, they just have to be "things" that you would recommend to someone. I love unique and new technologies... and since baby gear is always changing I know there are things out there that people have really strong feelings about.

As I said before, being in Alaska, things have to be available to us online, which rules out Babies R Us and the like. Amazon.com on the other hand covers most everything you could need... at least we think... so let me know of some cool stuff. I won't put any parameters on this... I want to see what people suggest!

One thing of note: I am very fond of portable, packable, versatile and cutting edge stuff. Yet, at the same time very traditional. I know that is an odd combination, and hard to explain but hopefully some people understand it.
