Coffee Talk: Voting for Non-Catholics

So I wanted to try something some other blogs do to get some discussion going. I have noticed that I post quite a bit, and get readers, but not the ego-filling commenting surge that I need want helps keep a blog vibrant! COFFEE TALK!

Seriously though, commenting is a good way to keep a blog nice and interesting, so from time to time I will  post some quick little topic so that we can all chime in. So if you don't normally comment, just drop a quick note, even if it is to simply vote or state your thoughts on the topic. (This is what Father Z and Faith and Family Live do on a regular basis.)

Today's topic is: Should Catholics vote for candidates that aren't Catholic? Why or Why Not? This may seem like a silly question, but can a Catholic in good conscience vote for someone that they know from the get go does not share the same virtues and values as themselves? Is it true that Catholics and Protestants de facto hold a different set of virtues/values than one another?

NB: I get this topic from recent reports that there are those that think Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann hold anti-Catholic beliefs. I think these are silly ploys by the left to disenfranchise them from the Catholic vote, but it does raise an academic question.

A Hidden Gem: St. John Neumann - Cooper Landing, Alaska

Many folks on the Kenai, let alone in Alaska, probably don't know about a hidden gem of a parish: St. John Neumann in Cooper Landing. To be precise, it is actually a Mission, but it has weekly Mass on Sunday at 12:30pm.

The property is about a half-mile down Snug Harbor Road, just before/over the bridge at Kenai Lake. You drive a bit up a driveway and the grounds sit at the bottom of the hillside; it is an impressive campus. The modest log church isn't anything super impressive, except that it is simplistic without being purposely vacant of sacred aesthetic. It is minimal in decoration and design, but it is culturally cohesive. It is everything that an Alaskan Mission Church should be, and in fact feels more Catholic than most of the other parishes on the peninsula. It fits into its setting and is authentic. Its design fits its purpose, there is continuity in the building and its design.

There are two out buildings, a residence type building, and  a shed that seems to house maintenance items for the Cross-walk, Stations of the Cross, and Cemetery. There is also a third structure, and really the focal point of the campus aside from the Church. It is a Marian shrine, that has beautiful stained glass. It is also handicapped accessible. It sits "inside" the Stations of the Cross walk.

The Stations of the Cross are beautiful and are a nice walk around the grounds. There is even a smaller version for wheel-chairs that points to the main crosses. I assume that these crosses are "properly erected" and so praying in-front of them offers and indulgence.

It is obvious that a lot of care and concern were taken when designing the various areas of this parish, and I am shocked that I had never heard about it, or been there before.

The Stations of the Cross lead all through the grounds, surrounding the Marian Shrine. There is even a path that leads up into the woods, and up the hill to a "Cross" that sits atop the hillside behind the Church. I can't say enough how impressed I was with the campus. It exudes beauty and embraces the rustic and rural atmosphere of Alaska. It utilize natural beauty, as well as seamlessly incorporating modern ingenuity. 

Just as we were leaving, I noticed one more path that lead down towards a creek bed. I saw a statue placed back in the woods. It turned out to be another Marian shrine, this time of Our Lady of Grace.

I suggest you visiting the parish sometime on your drive through Cooper Landing. It is worth a 15 minute stop at the very least. Some weekend I plan on taking the family and some friends out camping that way and then attending Mass on Sunday. I just wish more of the churches on the Peninsula would take some design cues from this parish. It really is a hidden gem.

Beautiful Churches as a Catalyst for Vocations

Father Longenecker has posted a very interesting article on his blog Standing on My Head about whether beautiful churches produce vocations. As someone very much in favor of instilling beauty in all areas of our faith, I am in agreement with much of what he says. He puts the questions as thus:

Can a beautiful church produce vocations to the priesthood? Perhaps we should reverse the question and say, "Does an ugly church discourage priestly vocations?" To answer the question we must think through, and come up with a theory of aesthetics and think through the reasons for both ugly churches and beautiful churches. Once we understand the mentality behind both we will be able to answer the question of whether a beautiful church can help produce new vocations to the priesthood.

Now, I as I said I agree with most of what he says here, but with a caveat. Churches exist beyond the boundaries of time in which they are built and the members of a parish sometimes fluctuate to a point where the church and its parishioners no longer match. So I do understand that there can be cases where Fr. L's arguments don't ring true, I get that. This is an argument though towards what we see in modern places, in newer parishes where new buildings and new renovations have occurred.

the correlation of internal to external

What we do have to consider though is how this link between external expression and internal belief actually correlate to one another. Fr. L talks about the how the way we build, decorate, and arrange our churches are in direct correlation to our internal belief, and I would agree. There is a saying in coaching that says, "You play like you practice." The meaning is of course that the effort we give in practice is the same amount we can ultimately give come game time, similarly when we build and decorate our churches what we are doing is physically and externally displaying our beliefs, theology, and internal concept of the Faith.

Fr. L. explains:

We then have to ask what these churches say about the faith, for the church building is a sacramental. It states what we believe. A building, whether we like it or not, is a statement of our values, our faith and our world view. A cheap building with no inner integrity of beauty--a cheap building that is 'dressed up' to look Catholic or 'pretty' with decorations is superficial and shallow and only skin deep....just like our faith too often I'm afraid! In our superficial, face lift world we build churches that are superficial where the 'beauty' is really on 'pretty' and skin deep.

the utilitarian aesthetic

I have seen this time and time again. As new churches go up in suburban America and growing population areas, we see an increase in auditorium style buildings that are cheaply built on the outside and fit what can only be described as an utilitarian aesthetic. The function is supreme to form, and form is often sacrificed for function, money, space, utility, and just about every other consideration. This has an affect not only on our interiorly but it also affects the Mass and Sacred functions that happen within. It is part of the cycle of belief matching form and form expressing belief, they are in essence a life cycle – a theological eco-system if you will but one that doesn't evolve to a higher ability, but one that dives towards entropy and where survival goes to the least fit, or most generic.

What about the liturgy that goes on in such buildings? Too often it also is superficial, sweet and comfortable and skin deep. Does such liturgy and do such buildings inspire vocations? Do they say to our young people, "Look what sacrifices we have made to worship God?" Do they say, "We have given all to build something beautiful for God"? or do they actually say, "It's okay to give God second best. It's okay to give him what's left over."? Do they come out of the building yawning and wondering what next for Sunday or do they come out full of awe and thankfulness for the beautiful worship of God?

Of course a beautiful church is not a panacea. It isn't a magic bean that creates a beanstalk to vocation-Heaven. It also isn't a prescription for the ills of modernity that plague our disbelief in the Faith, but it sure is a start.

inspiration 'to' the Faith

There will be those that argue the external and institutional aspects of our Faith don't matter because we need to start at belief, without it nothing else matters. What I am arguing isn't that that isn't 90% right, but that we are creatures of holistic thought. We don't compartmentalize different things. The second we take our children to church they are being subconsciously affected whether we believe they are are or not. We are sensory creatures, we learn, believe, and internalize thing through all of our senses and so to deny certain ones over others is not only foolish, but arrogant.

So then, if we can inspire people in the Faith, then it would follow that we can inspire people to the Faith, in terms of vocations. It would make sense that a person inspired by the house of God, in the form of a Church, would be inspired to devote their life – a gift from God, back to God in the form of Ordination or obedience of a religious order. There is great sacrifice in both, a care and concern for what occurs in the present and in the future. In the past churches were constructed with generation upon generation in mind. While many modernists attempt to forge a legacy out of themselves instead, out of their own cult of personality, there is little hope of anything lasting into the future in that.

A church and a religious vocation are a legacy for sure, but built of something much studier – not that of a person but built out of the Grace of God.

A lesson in humanity: Taught by Matt Archbold and Dick Clark

Two nights ago I, like millions of others, watched TV on New Year's Eve. Also like many others, part of that time was spent watching Dick Clark's Rockin' New Year's Eve. And again, like many, I made the statement: "Aww, they need to let him retire. It's just too sad to watch. It's just cruel to have him on TV." Most everyone around me mumbled in agreement, and we nervously changed the subject and tried not to comment on or focus on the images coming from our TV.

This same situation has played out the last few years... in pretty much the same way, by many who watch that show. I thought we were all on the same page, all correct in our assesment. I figured that this was nothing more than a TV gimmick to pull people in. Maybe it was ABC's version of broadcasting a "car-wreck." Regardless, it was wrong, it was cruel, and we all might even be doing something immoral simply by watching. Who would do that to someone just for the sake of ratings? How could they be so inhumane?

Then I read Matt Archbold's, from the Creative Minority Report, most recent article over at the National Catholic Register: Making Fun of Dick Clark. It make me realize how wrong I was. I was dead wrong, and if you agreed with what I said above – you are wrong as well.

Matt Archbold made some really interesting points in his article, which you should really read in its entirety. Interestingly, he took what I thought about Dick Clark and made me realize that I wasn't really concerned about him. Instead, his article made me realize that I was being selfish and that I was concerned only with my own comfort and entertainment. As Archbold writes:

Dick Clark is not a legacy, he is a human being.

In these modern times, we seem to feel increasingly “uncomfortable” with anyone who looks less handsome than an A-lister or doesn’t speak as well as Ryan Seacrest. We don’t do sickness anymore. We don’t do ailments. The disabled are something to be hidden away, embarrassed about.

We used to care for our grandparents at home so we all grew up knowing a little something about it. We watched our father carry his mother upstairs after dinner every night. We watched our mother wipe her mother’s face with a napkin. And we learned. We helped pick them up when they fell. And we tried not to notice how embarrassed they were.

But as a culture, we don’t really do that anymore. The old and disabled are all too frequently shipped off and visited infrequently. We prefer to remember them as they were we tell ourselves - as a way of honoring them. But that’s not what’s going on. We just don’t want to be reminded that life isn’t perfect, sickness happens, and disabilities don’t discriminate.

Maybe that’s why 90 percent of Down Syndrome babies are aborted. Maybe that’s why the elderly are euthanized for fear of becoming a burden. They must not be seen. They are the imperfect.

Wow – I was stunned after reading this. He was dead on. But even as I read the above paragraphs, I wouldn't let myself be 100% convinced. I agreed with him, but only in passing. It was as if I said out-loud: "Oh yes, I agree." But then silently disagreed with him, still holding on to my belief that having Dick Clark on TV was somehow wrong. But that is when Archbold dropped the hammer:

I recall when Pope John Paul II bravely faced Parkinson’s in such a public way and we all watched as that always charming and so loved face was radically altered by prescription drugs and transformed into that immovable Parkinson’s Mask. So many publicly urged the Pontiff to retire. Oh they had their reasons. They said he should do it for his own good. Or for the good of the Church.

I found it scary that so many followers of a crucified Christ should think that a suffering man was unfit to lead the Church.

Dick Clark has had an amazing life. And this is the phase of life he’s in right now. Dick Clark was always a great host. But he seems to be more than that now. He seems heroic to me now. He knows he’s slurring his words. He knows he doesn’t look like the teenager he looked like for so long. And I think he’s exactly what we need to see. In these days when everyone on television looks vaguely perfect in a similar way, to me Dick Clark looks…human.

Wow, actually double-WOW! He got me. I could not argue out of this. He is completely right. Dick Clark, like the late Pope John Paul II, in his frailty, suffering, and imperfection... is nothing less than human.

He was right in so many ways. What really hit home though was when he said: "I found it scary that so many followers of a crucified Christ should think that a suffering man was unfit to lead the Church." Yes – again, I was floored. Here I am, taking my usually rock solid beliefs and throwing them out the window because I was so blinded by my own... well pride. But I was also blinded by my comfort and my desire to exist in a humanity that is, well... pretty.

It is quite humbling to realize you are wrong, especially when it is in the private of your mind. I realized that not only was I wrong, but that I was wrong not in how I analyzed the situation – but wrong in how I actually thought about humanity. As someone that considers them self Pro-Life, I had somehow gotten this one horribly wrong. Where was my compassion? No, not compassion... where was my respect? Who was I trying to protect? It wasn't Dick Clark... I was trying to protect myself. The same way we try and shield young children from the realities of life, I tried to guard myself from the reality of humanity. 

Matt Archbold is right: "Dick Clark was always a great host. But he seems to be more than that now. He seems heroic to me now. He knows he’s slurring his words. He knows he doesn’t look like the teenager he looked like for so long. And I think he’s exactly what we need to see. In these days when everyone on television looks vaguely perfect in a similar way, to me Dick Clark looks…human."

You may not agree with Matt or I right away, but you should think about it. Life isn't always pretty, but it is always beautiful. It is really easy to disagree with this idea – it is more comfortable and safe to say that people like Pope John Paul II and Dick Clark should sit hidden away to prevent our sensitivities from being shaken. But why should we hide away those that choose to fight on in life, despite the suffering and struggles they face? Isn't that what we teach from an early age? "Walk it off." "No crying in baseball." Etc...? 

Well then why as adults do we shy away from suffering? Is that why we hang "Resurrected Christ" in our parishes now as opposed to Crucifixes? Are we afraid to admit that our salvation comes in the form of suffering? It seems odd that we have gained so much from the pain and struggles of Christ and the Saints and yet we hide it away in favor of comfort and ease. Certainly it was the Resurrection that brought us Salvation. But that Resurrection wasn't accomplished on its own. 

We shy away from watching Dick Clark, for the same reason we don't want to watch the movie The Passion of the Christ. We are too afraid to watch what haunts our dreams. We are too afraid to upset the happiness of life, because happiness is easy – suffering is hard. Pain and suffering are often accompanied by fear. The emotion that freezes us in our tracks and prevents us from moving forward. To defeat fear, we often have to face it head on. 

We cannot defeat fear without facing those things which create the fear. We cannot have salvation without first the crucifixion. Matt Archbold through Dick Clark has taught me that humanity isn't about the pretty faces, and new years are not only about the successes we achieve but also the sufferings we endured and the trials we overcame. Our redemption isn't from our own suffering... but from Christ's. He chose to endure for our sake, so that we could know beauty and comfort. Sometimes we must look upon the destruction that blossomed the beauty... so that we may remember our own humanity.
