Multiculturalism in the work places is becoming increasingly common as staff in local and international offices become more diverse. Office dynamics can be challenged by the language and cultural difference that exist in the multicultural environment. However, once experienced, many people will agree that if appropriately managed even these challenges can directly contribute to the success of a business.
Accommodation of Diversity Is Essential for Strategic Planning
Many staff members, who are new migrants to a region, arrive with a strong skill base and wide experience in their country of origin. When these skills and experience are added to the team, they can be invaluable assets within the strategic plan.
Appropriate leadership should not affect the way you lead your team when you are working with a diverse membership. It should be consistent and leadership methods used should apply to all staff members. However, it is appropriate to modify your techniques so that you are able to modify the approach your methods take, rather than modifying the methods themselves.
Modifying Leadership Techniques Not Methods
An example of this might be in approaching cultural values where it is inappropriate for a man and woman to be alone in the room together. This should not prevent meetings between you, it may however determine where you schedule those meetings, so that there if privacy is required, perhaps using a windowed wall so that the room is clearly visible to other staff may be appropriate. This minor modification may enable the work place to employ someone who is highly skilled, yet hesitates to accept the job because of the issues of gender relations.
Study the Cultures and Understand the Differences
Smartly, there are cultures where it is inconsiderate to speak against those in authority or to disagree with their actions or suggestions. You may however want the input of the staff members and know they have some good ideas. It is appropriate to look for alternative ways for the staff members to voice their opinions and concerns that does not require them to do it publicly. You may have a feedback corner or have some other sort of communication that gives them the facility of venting out their feelings and suggestions.
Language diversity maybe accommodated by the provision of staff translators in international offices to assist translations of materials, resources, and projects from the language of the country the business is being conducted in, and the language you speak or your business is being conducted.
