Secular Music, Catholic Purposes

This post is going to be sort of an open thread. I really want to have a discussion about this issue because I am not sure how to think about it.

When I made the video: "We Are Catholic." I made it with a secular song, "All We Are" by: Sugarland. They are a country band, and the words and meaning seemed to fit the purpose of the video. I wanted something fast paced and "peppy" to grab and keep the attention of the teen group I was creating it for. This song wasn't the original choice, it just happened to be on my computer, and I mocked up some images to it. Someone liked it so much they told me I had to use it.

Ok, now this might simply come down to preference. "I don't like secular music" or "I don't like this particular song." My question is: would this video (or any video of its kind) really get more attention if it used a "Liturgical" or "Sacred" song? Would the impact be the same? If so, what kind of song?

Now, I am not worried about people saying they don't like the song, because a lot of people are still posting: like Fr. Ray Blake. His message was: "Hate the music but I love the images." I am not worried about my video per se, I am more interested to know what people think about using secular music in these sort of situations. Marc Barnes from Bad Catholic recently wrote a piece for VirtuousPla.net about Liturgical Music. Now this video obviously isn't the Liturgy, but do you think the same rules should apply? What do you think?

Would my video have been better if it used something like "Panis Angelicus"? If so, how would it be better? Would it still capture the attention of everyone in a viral sort of way?

OPEN THREAD.

New Missal & New Music?

When it comes to music, I speak a different language. I can't sing, I don't play and instrument, and therefore I have never really focused on music on this blog very much. That being said, I love music especially Chant and polyphony. Needless to say, most modern American Catholic Churches end up using sing-songy hymns written by protestants (literally). When questioned about this the response is: "They are approved songs by the Church." What they mean is that the USCCB has approved some hymnal or missalette which has these songs in there.

Now that we are 40 years+ into this way of thinking, many adult Catholics don't know anything but these songs. So when you ask them their favorite Catholic song you get responses like "On Eagle's Wings" and "Gather Us In." To them, these songs are nostalgic, even if they weren't organically inserted into the faith, but instead were shoved in like mail in a post office box, slipped in during the night.

Well, for those that have longed for a return of more appropriate and liturgically congruent music the New Missal might offer some hope. Jeffrey Tucker of The Chant Cafe and The New Liturgical Movement has written a nice post about the changes to the Missal regarding music. A lot of it is speculative, and of course he has no idea how it will be actually implemented by parishes, but it offers hope.

Here is his take on the situation:
Some of the most advanced thinkers in the world of music and liturgy have long identified the critical problem in Catholic music today. They have pointed out that the Mass itself provides for the texts and the music for the Mass, but in the General Instruction on on the Roman Missal, there appears a loophole. Musicians can sing what is appointed, or (“option 4”) they can sing something else, and that something else is limited only by what the musicians themselves deem as “appropriate.” What this has meant, in effect, is: anything goes. This is why it often seems that when it comes to music at Mass that, well, anything goes.

I’m happy to report that the legislative ground has just shifted, and dramatically so. The new translation of the General Instruction removes the discretion from the music team to sing pretty much whatever it wants. The new text, which pertains to the new translation of the Missal that comes into effect on Advent this year, makes it clear beyond any doubt: the music of the Mass is the chanted propers of the Mass. There are options but these options all exist within the universe of the primary normative chant. There can be no more making up some random text, setting it to music, and singing it as the entrance, offertory, or communion.
Go check out the rest at: The Chant Cafe.

What's Rockabilly Music?

What is rockabilly music? I've had to believe for a long time to respond to which issue! Theoretically, rockabilly can be a specifically wild as well as unrestrained way of music in which became out of the roots regarding region music as well as doldrums music noisy . Fifties. The Beatles' George Harrison idolized Perkins along with examined his or her music greatly. Anf the husband ended up being by far not the only one who cites Perkins being a significant effect. Perkins' acoustic guitar playing has dished up as the basis of training regarding countless youthful guitarists over the years.

Therefore, can any one of that actually reply the original problem? What is rockabilly in any case? Rockabilly is raw excitement. It is unrestrained music developed by foolhardy, youthful artists have been creating the principles as they had been planning alongside. It really is no-holds-barred fun. The Sound of Silence

I am not a music man. Jeffrey Tucker is. His blog: The Chant Cafe is a great source of Liturgical Music Wisdom. While I cannot sing, I do very, very  much appreciate the connection of music and the Mass. His recent post is very saddening to me, because I came from a place where there were many parishes with great scholas, choirs, and organists.

An excerpt of his thoughts:
This time of year, the losses in the area of music for Holy Week strikes me. I look through the Liber Usualis and I compare with what appears in the Missalette, and the result is absolutely devastating. Then I compare what is in the modern Graduale - which isn't all that different from the old Graduale - and the effect is the same: a sense of near-total loss. Even our own schola, which strives to be liturgically proper and works hard to retain and revive, ends up singing truncated versions and perhaps 30% of the total music that is given in the books. As for the Missalettes, one wonders if the compilers ever even bothered to look at the normative liturgical books for the Roman Rite.

Web 2.0 Tool Alert: uJam

by Michael Grzelak

Just wanted to highlight an awesome web 2.0 tool that I started to use after a conversation with a fellow teacher on Twitter (#edchat). It is called uJam and it allows a person to create a free account to make free songs.

I have zero musical ability (I am not lying... it's pretty bad), but this site does not care about my lack of musical ability.

There are four different ways to use the site for music creation; the way I used it was simple -- I recorded my voice.  My focus was giving directions for a test. After I finished recording (and I did attempt to sing a little) the site was able to sync my voice and speed to a variety of background music options.  I was able to change the style of my voice, the tone, the pace, and so much more.  It was awesome!  If you do have the ability to read notes... well... still check it out as you can manipulate certain features to make your songs sound better.

My students thought my song was dorky, but sometimes that is the role of the teacher in order to gain some interest.

Have your students play around with the site.  They will love it and it can be used for project creation.  It has an endless amount of creative potential and your students can actually create a song of their own and save it as an mp3 file.

Imagine your students with headphones on, but instead of listening to their songs they are listening to class-created music that will help them review/learn content.

History of Music Notation | Notation Software

Music Notation History
The time of before Christmas, wherever we go, we will always hear Christmas songs that swelled, but has it ever implied in your mind the question, how the origins of music notation, so we are all over the world can enjoy the same song with the same melody. Even, now there is a good notation software. I found it when I looking for sheet music downloads sources on internet.

In Ugarit found some square paper (from year 1400 BC), that written songs text in Huri language, accompanied by a kind of notation, but it did not work for the re-echoes or in singing.

Likewise there is no certainty whether the Hebrews have a notation system, it has been in try to interpret the signs of sound pressure from the Hebrew script, as a form of notation, but it did not work, because the signs of the sound pressure was more intended to give than to music, in addition to these signs is in addition made from the original work.

In the absence of standardized musical notation or which can be written, we will not be able to disseminate a piece of music or pass it to future generations. Because of this music notation, so today we can still enjoy the works of Bach, Mozart and Beethoven.

Who was the originator of modern western music notation idea that as we know it today? In the eleventh century (995-1050) a Benedictine monk of the order named Guido of Arezzo trying to teach their students to memorize tones from c-d-e-f-g-a. Because he was familiar and already familiar in his ear with the title "Ut Queant Laxis", Christian songs about the apostle John, so he created a mnemonis tool:
  • UT-queant laxis
  • RE-sonare fibris
  • MI-re gestorum
  • FA-muli tuorum
  • SOL-ve pollutis
  • LA-biis reatum
  • Sancte Iohannes
Original syllable of the words to the six expressions can be used as a name that has been ringing: ut, te, mi, fa, sol, la. Until now we still use this system, only to say UT has revamped be dropped after La is still no additional Si.

Guido of Arezzo is the freeing of human dependence on the previous century than the oral tradition passed on to the next. Due to the tone of musical notation is the human race today can have a very large property in the form of deposits of hundreds of thousands of musical works ranging from a heavy piece of music, to the simple songs to symphony-a symphony of complex.

Through the notation of this reason, the music began to be written and taught from sheet music, music theory also can be followed through with a notation which is easier to learn a song or instrument of music, and start at the same polyphony (more than one rhythm that can be played simultaneously) as well as creating harmony in the music tone or song.

From the school of Notre Dame in Paris created motet. Motet is beginning a four-part harmony soprano, alto, tenor and bass. John C. Hatton who lived the 18th century (? -1793) Has created a melody that is better known by the name "Duke Street", based on the name of the street where he lived in St. Helen - England. It turns out this melody became so popular, so they can be assessed is the most widely used melody to create songs of spiritual praise.

These include praise which uses the melody from "Duke Street": Almighty Father, Bless the Word * Forth in Thy Name, O Lord * From All That Dwell Below the Skies * I Know That My Redeemer Lives * Jesus Shall Reign * O God, Beneath Thy Guiding Hand * O Lord, Thou Art My God and King * Our Lord Is Risen from the Dead.

My question is, why are Christmas songs just beautiful to enjoy in Christmas time only, after that it was so bland it is not as beautiful anymore, cannot even touch our feelings again, no differentiation from other pop songs?

Perhaps there are of you who can help to give his comments. Thank you.

Lyrics Metric - All Yours

All the lives always tempted to trade
Will they hate me for all the choices I’ve made
Will they stop when they see me again?
I can’t stop now I know who I am

Now I’m all yours, I’m not afraid
And you're all mine, say what they may
And all your love I’ll take to the grave
And all my life starts now

Tear me down they can take you out of my thoughts
Under every scar there’s a battle I’ve lost
Will they stop when they see us again?
I can’t stop now I know who I am

Now I’m all yours, I’m not afraid

When the radio isn’t on you can hear the songs
A guided light on the dark road your walking on
A sign post to find the dreams you thought was gone
Someone to help you move the obstacles you stumbled on
Someone to help you rebuild after the rubble’s gone
We are the World connected by a common bond
Love the whole planet sing it along

Liturgical Music Mayhem Madness...

Ok... I need to be as charitable as possible with this post. That will be hard since I am going to be discussing traditional vs. modern music at Mass.

Our local parish has 2 Masses every Sunday: 9:00am & 11:30am. We have only attended the late mass twice. We also chose the church (1 of 2) because it seemed more... traditional? conservative? orthodox? Anyways, I don't want to turn my blog into a 'bash my parish' type site, I don't think that is helpful most of the time. For the most part, things are done well, with the usual ups and downs any parish has.

Yet, I cannot help but be frustrated with this 11:30 Mass. The first one we went to there was a video screen and a "Band" of some type. It seemed from some of the comments and discussions that it was a fairly new thing. So I took it as an experiment, and hadn't been back since. Until today...

The video screen was back, along with guitars, drums, BONGOS, a triangle, and a RAIN STICK. Really... a Rainstick. Now, we came from a pretty orthodox parish, housed in a pretty new and modern church. It was an interesting but GOOD mix of traditional and modern. The music at our old parish was traditional for almost every mass, except the late 5pm Mass on Sundays, which was specifically set up as the Life Teen Mass. In other words you knew what you were getting, and it was at a time specifically set aside for the teens.

This Mass is not that, at least it isn't set up that way. Now don't get me wrong, I like worship music, the sort of stuff you hear on the radio. I like it when I am driving in my car, studying, getting ready for sleep, etc... I don't expect to walk into Mass and see Casting Crowns or Third Day setting up to play a set. I think that Pope Benedict covers the issue well in "The Sacred Liturgy." The point is... Mass is not the place for a RAINSTICK.

Now for those of you that think I am being to harsh... the worst part was that the video screen didn't aid us most of the time. For one of the songs, the person controlling it was flashing through all of the songs. Now they didn't just have the songs, they had EVERYTHING that the congregation is supposed to sing or say. Which I think is counterproductive, especially since the church already has missalettes. It proved to be quite distracting, and like I said counterproductive. On top of that, the songs they have in their repertoire didn't exactly match up with All Saints Day. Overall, I just wish more churches were focused on making the Liturgy more meaningful as opposed to making it more entertaining.
We as Catholics should focus on Christ and not on ourselves. That music was not selected to worship God better, but instead was played to make us feel better. When we do things like that with the Liturgy we have already begun to erode its meaning. Instead of focusing on God, we are focusing on ourselves, which is the reason Christ had to get up on the cross in the first-place... it's almost as if we have learned  nothing.

I think The Crescat sums things up with this post: "Still not a liturgical instrument"
