Clear Firefox History and Temp Files on Shutdown Automatically

There’s a running joke in my family that my paranoia (as far as security is concerned) knows no bounds. On the computer, my passwords are at least 30 characters long, I try to surf on as many secure webpages (https) as I can, I keep everything in encrypted folders behind firewalls, and when I close my Firefox browser, all my personal browsing information is automatically dumped and deleted so no nefarious devil can get their hands on it. Yep, you can call me Captain Paranoia.

This is one of the reasons why I like Firefox. If you go to Tools–>Options–>Privacy, there is a section there called “Private Data” :

Now, by clicking “clear now”, you can wipe all your private data immediately but you can set it up so it wipes your browsing history, temp files and other stuff automatically every time Firefox closes. You can obviously achieve this by ticking “Always clear my private data when I close Firefox”.

If you want to be asked first, tick the second box “Ask me before clearing private data” but personally I found it really irritating always having a pop-up box jump out at me. So I turned it off. But I guess it all comes down to personal preference.

But you may not want ALL the private data cleared. For example, I decided to keep my cookies as I didn’t want to log in and out of certain sites all the time (preferring to manually delete them once a week instead). So by clicking on the “settings” button, you can tell Firefox what you want wiped when your browser closes and what you want kept.

Some of them, such as cookies and cache, are fairly straight-forward. But if you would like explanations of the others, Firefox Facts has a nice article explaining what they mean and what they save exactly.

This is a feature that everyone should have enabled by default. As I said, you may find it inconvenient to always have your cookies wiped but you should always have everything else wiped and dumped every time your browser closes. Otherwise who knows who will be looking at that information behind your back? Your partner? Your boss? Your roommate? Law enforcement without a warrant? These days, in the era of the Patriot Act, it pays to dump your internet data when you’re finished with it.

Method 1:

1. Login to you Email Account.
2. Send an empty email with any title to YAHOOGROUPNAME-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

Change YAHOOGROUPNAME with yahoo group name. Like if you want to subscribe http://groups.yahoo.com/group/allthefun then simply send an email to allthefun-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

3. After sending email, you will get a confirmation email within 1-2 minutes. In this email you will find a link. Click on that link and you will go on a new Yahoo Page.
4. On that new page, look at the end of page and you will find a like
As an alternate option, you may join the mailing list instead.
5. Click on that link and you will be subscribed to that group.

Method 2:

1. Open http://groups.yahoo.com/subscribe/YAHOOGROUPNAME

Change YAHOOGROUPNAME with yahoo group name. Like if you want to subscribe Allthefun Yahoo! Group then the URL will be http://groups.yahoo.com/subscribe/allthefun

2. Give your email on that page in a box click on Request Confirmation Email

3. Now,
4. you will get a confirmation email within 1-2 minutes. In this email you will find a link. Click on that link and you will go on a new Yahoo Page.
5. On that new page, look at the end of page and you will find a like
6. Click on that link and you will be subscribed to that group.

Block Websites on a PC Without Using any Software

Steps to block:

1. Browse C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc
2. Find the file named “HOSTS”
3. Open it in notepad
4. Under “127.0.0.1 localhost” Add 127.0.0.2 www.sitenameyouwantblocked.com , and that site will no longer be accessable.
5. Done!

So

127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.0.2 www.blockedsite.com

–>www.blockedsite.com is now unaccessable<--
For every site after that you want to add, just add “1″ to the last number in the internal ip (127.0.0.2) and then the addy like before.

Steps to unblock:
Now just remove the line (containing URL of site ) and if you have added more than one sites to block then make those number come in serial order like

127.0.0.1 localhost

127.0.0.4 anyothersite.com

Now for example if you want to unblock orkut.com then remove the line and number them in a way that they come in a serial manner

127.0.0.1 localhost

Hotkeys To Turn Off The CPU or Monitor

You may know that Windows can be configured to turn-off or stand-by CPU or Monitor after a certain time of inactivity. This is help to save the power used by an idle computer. There are also two Buttons on a keyboard Power and Sleep. Those buttons are also used for the same purpose i.e. to turn off the computer or standby it. As those two buttons are not available on Standard Keyboards or other too, so you show configure hotkeys to Shutdown or Stand-by you Computer or Monitor Screen.

NirCMd, a small size command-line utility application provides you features to configure hot keys manually. Now, for making hot keys mannually using NirCMd, you need to create shortcuts. 1 Hot key for 1 shortcut. Just Download NirCMd. Now Go to your Desktop and Create a Shortcut by right click > new > create shortcut. User will get a new window on screen, Click on Browse and Locate downloaded application (NirCMd). (as shown in picture)

Now, at the end of text field location of the item add any desired command given below.

• monitor off (for creating a hotkey to turn off your monitor)
• standby (If you want to standby you computer)
• exitwin poweroff (if you want to turn off your computer)

After addition of any of above code, the result would be as shown in below given picture.

Once the shortcut is created, right click on that shortcut and click on properties. Press Alt+Ctrl+M simultaneously in “Shortcut Key” field.

Now Whenever you want to turn off your Monitor, just press Alt+Ctrl+M keys from your keyboard.

How To Send a Complete Web Page via Email

There are two ways to send a webpage to someone. The most common and the most followed is to copy paste the webpage link in the email. The second is to send the entire web page via email, that is include it within the body of the email.
Which one do you think is more effective? My own thinking and experience says that a URL though short and sweet just does not catch the eye as a full webpage does. Call it a human habit; we put off clicking a link when we have to go through quite a few emails in our inbox. An entire webpage has a better chance of grabbing my eyeballs because a glance says whether the information is relevant to me or not. Also the lurking danger of clicking an unsafe link makes me lean in favor of seeing the content first hand.
Most webpages do not include an option send full web page via email. For such pages here are some solutions I have found handy.

Send Web Page as Email in Outlook 2007

Since I use Outlook 2007 for most of my mailing, it makes sense to use this to send webpages. A few steps let you open a webpage within Outlook and send it as a whole in an email instead of as a link.

• Open Outlook 2007. Navigate to View – Toolbars – Web.

• Use the Search toolbar (located on the right) to go to the desired URL.

Once the page loads, click on Actions – Send Webpage by Email. A new message box opens up with your webpage pasted in the content window. Fill the address fields and mail it out.

EmailTheWeb (v2.12) is a web service which lets you send the exact webpage to anyone right from your browser. Presently, there are three ways of using it –
As a web service – copy-paste the page link in the URL field on EmailTheWeb.com and click email web page.

The new Internet Explorer 8 makes it convenient to send a webpage as an email. IE8 has two instantly accessible buttons located on the Command toolbar. The use has the choice to click any of the two to send a webpage either as a complete webpage or as a link. The Send Page by Email button loads the webpage into the default email client.

If you do not see the buttons on your browser, click on View – Toolbars – Command Bar.

Note: This trick works only if your ISP (Internet service provider) gives you dynamic IP address. A dynamic IP address changes on every reset/restart of Modem. Majority of ISPs works with dynamic IP so hopefully it will work for you also.
