Anyway, recently here in Michigan, a dad was charged with 4th degree child abuse after pinning his 14 year old to the wall subsequently giving him a bloody nose. Apparently, the young man was playing video games and when he was asked to take out the garbage (maybe a reference to the game?) he threw the controller on the ground, which then bounced and put a hole in the wall (if i remember the story correctly.) The dad then pinned him against the wall for doing so, and now is facing a misdemeanor charge. Don't forget the fact he will likely end up on the Central Registry and have costs and fines. Not to mention the fact any respect his kid had for him is probably gone.
I've never had a problem with corporal punishment. And working very closely with Child Protective Services in my daily job, I see a lot of cases where parents do in fact abuse or neglect their kids. But what about those cases where kids my just be unruly and don't respond to anything else? How do you think those should be handled?
Obviously, the Church condemns abuse and neglect (I'll get the Canon for it later), but even then, it's a case-by-case basis. What should constitute abuse? How far can a parent go to discipline their kids?
I think that you have to take each child as you find them, and try to seek out what they respond to best. Some kids just don't care if they get spankings. I know I didn't when my mother gave them to me (it never hurt). But I sure responded if I was going to get one from dad! But never have I felt that they abused me, or hurt me in some way. They always did it out of love. Hmmm...
So what do you think?
