A musing in praise of David Cameron

by Peter Bingle

Yesterday I attended a Tory Party lunch at The Savoy Hotel. The guest speaker was David Cameron. He was on vintage form. Relaxed. Amusing. Confident.

In front of an adoring audience the PM explained why it had been the right thing for both the Tory Party and the country for him to create a coalition with the Lib Dems. He was loudly applauded ...

The last year has been transformational for David Cameron. On election night in 2010 he was a loser. There was disbelief that he had failed to win a majority. There was anger about the campaign. There was concern about what would happen next.

David Cameron's response was to make the speech of his life on the Friday morning. The rest is history.

Twelve months on everything has changed. The PM dominates the political landscape. He is respected at home and abroad. The world is his oyster.

The Tory Party has been modernised. A new generation is in control which wants to take the party in a direction that would have been unthinkable ten years ago. The coalition has increased rather than dampened this modernising zeal.

What was most interesting about David's speech yesterday was its upbeat nature. The PM exudes optimism and confidence. The comparison with the Deputy PM's demeanour is fascinating. It has become Nick Clegg contra mundum ...

After his speech the PM worked the room. The political magic and personal charisma was there for all to see. David has become a formidable politician.

The next few years are going to be difficult. Times are still tough. Faith and trust in politics remains low. Yet every time I see the PM I become more convinced that he will succeed in redefining the centre ground of British politics in a way that will make the Labour Party irrelevant.

With David in Number 10 life in the body politic will never be dull.

What is your view of the PM? Was to right to create the coalition? Will he redefine the centre ground?
