When it comes to social media, people tend to fall into one of three different camps. There are the "I really, really love it" group who just seem to get it, the "you've got to be kidding, why on earth do I want waste my time with that?" sector that think it's a complete waste of time and finally the "I don't get it" group who really can't see the point and who don't understand the whole social media concept.
So what about you? Are you social media phobic?
Are you one of the people that says...
"I can't see the point in it."
"I don't care what people are having for lunch."
"What's the point? It's not as is anyone actually reads the stuff."
"None of my customers use it so why should I?"
Social media isn't that different from face to face networking. I'm sure you go along to those events, meet new people, chat about them, their lives and their businesses. So if it's normal to do it in person why not do it online too? For a start you'll be able to chat with people you wouldn't normally have contact with.
As the name would suggest, social media is about being 'social' - it's not constant selling, it's about chatting, building relationships, sharing information and being interested in other people.
Customer interaction
In your everyday working life you interact with your customers. You don't just grab their order and move on to the next person. You invest time in customer service to build rapport and a relationship to make sure they come back to you again.
So if you're networking and chatting with your customers why not give social media a go and reach out to a whole new marketplace.
To get to grips with it all you have to do is transfer the communication skills you use every day into the online world.
As a freelance copywriter I have found social media invaluable. By using Twitter, Facebook, online forums, social bookmarking sites and blogging I have gained greater online exposure, some amazing clients and superb people who are ready to help me when I need them.
You see it's not just about finding customers; it's about reaching out, talking and finding people who can help you.
So go on, give it a try, you might just enjoy it. Miracles won't happen over night but your perseverance will pay off.
