Leadership Development - Are You Willing to Grow?

Personal development is a core competency of leadership. It is vital for all leaders to make an on-going investment in themselves to learn, grow and develop. By making a commitment to expand your knowledge base, and build your leadership skills, it will provide future opportunities for career advancement. You as the leader will also be setting a powerful example and the foundation for subordinates to follow suit. Thus, creating future career opportunities for those who follow you.
By displaying a commitment to expand as a leader, a sense of personal achievement will be realized. The acquired skill and ability to overcome obstacles to persist and persevere to reach personal and professional goals is another positive outcome to investing in your development. Another intrinsic value to keeping this commitment will generate a more positive outlook and will encourage and empower others to be engaged with you as their leader.
Growing as a leader requires planting formal seeds of knowledge to keep current with information and trends. Formal coursework including completing your undergrad degree or advancing to a masters degree will ultimately serve the purpose of setting you apart from the competition. When I had the experience of searching for talent, I always looked for people had additional certifications or were on the road to advancing their formal education. It proved to me that these types of people knew how to take action and complete a goal.
Gaining feedback from your boss, peers and subordinates will sometimes provide the necessary information for you to determine your areas of growth. Performance evaluations can be used to determine particular areas of development. If you are responsible for a team of people I suggest you make it a priority to conduct formal performance evaluations. This type of tool will set the stage for growth opportunities and an enhanced career path for all involved. I've conducted many exit interviews during my career and have found the most common reason people leave companies is because they have not have direct feedback from their boss.
I currently have several leadership books that I am in the process of reading. The 100 Absolutely Unbreakable Laws of Business Success by Brian Tracy who is one of America's knowledgeable and inspirational speakers of our time and an authority regarding the topic of leadership and human potential. Leadership Charisma Step by Step to Being a More Successful and Charismatic Leader by Bud Haney, Jim Sirbasku with Deiric McCann. These authors have built an extremely successful international business and support 40,000 companies with their product line.
I encourage you to embrace and expand your personal development competency so that you can serve as an informed and inspirational leader.
