bachelor business studies

Accounting is still the language of business, but the business environment is undergoing radical change, as is the role of accountants in the business environment. Increasingly, accountants, particularly in the corporate sector, are being required to take on a business perspective rather than the historical functional role. For this reason the Accountancy programme has been designed so that you can combine a comprehensive range of both accounting and non-accounting electives with some required core accounting papers in your degree. However, if you are certain you wish to follow a professional accounting career, you should consider the Bachelor of Accountancy programme as an alternative to this BBS Accountancy major.

  • Introduction

The programme provides a vehicle for you to develop your knowledge and understanding of the process of identifying and communicating financial and non-financial information important to today’s organisations. It will assist you in making informed judgements from available information and resources.

In addition to the essential accounting skills, students who successfully complete the BBS Accountancy major at Massey University develop inter-personal, computer and business communication skills.

    Entry requirements

There are no special entry requirements for the Accountancy programme beyond those that qualify you for study at the University. However, competence in English is essential. If you are not confident in this subject you are recommended to undertake additional study prior to enrolling, or attend a Massey University summer programme in English.

For general entry requirements see Massey University entry requirements.

    Career opportunities

The Accountancy major prepares you primarily for careers in business. However, graduates may seek employment in education, the corporate or public sector or as a consultant providing business or tax advisory services. An Accountancy major can also lead to a career within general management.

Because the major is flexible and gives you the opportunity to have a concentration in a particular area of accountancy, the career options are numerous, depending on the combination of papers you choose to take. Many of our graduates start their careers in an accounting function but later move into other areas, taking with them the skills of financial and non-financial performance evaluation which is so important for senior executives.

BBS graduates with an Accountancy major can seek admission to the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants by completing a fourth year of study and a number of papers that are not specifically required in the BBS degree. If you would like more information on this route to NZICA membership, please contact the School of Accountancy Administrator. You should seek advice early in your degree programme because a number of the NZICA required papers should be included in your BBS degree as electives
